A Spanky’s Good Time
, / 8 November 2012

Billed as a haven for those who love tender ribs and dirty martinis, this newly opened resto with its old-timey atmosphere (complete with a soundtrack from the 1920’s-40’s) and a menu Al Capone would appreciate, is a fun spot to enjoy a good meal.

Paul Counihan is a Managing Partner of Spanky’s and is also one of the masterminds behind such local favorites as Red Square, Hacienda, and Black Cat. With this latest project he and his associates have taken over Elbow Room, and imbued the two-story space with an old-school, vintage charm. Reading over the menu we were anxious to see if the food tasted as good as it sounded. We started with the Honey BBQ Chicken Wings (Rp 35,000), and Pulled Pork Quesadillas (Rp 55,000). The wings were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside with a delectable sweet and tangy flavor. The Quesadillas were chock full of pork and cheese, and though a bit on the greasy side, were still tasty treat.

We then ordered the Baby Back Pork Ribs (Rp 129,000 for ½ rack) with the “spicy Alabama glaze,” which were tender and delicious. Nardi, the Marketing Executive, bragged when we sat down that, “Spanky’s has the best pork dishes in town!” Everyone at our table concluded that he just might be right. Since Martinis are one of Spanky’s specialties we ordered a couple to judge their quality for ourselves. We tried their Lemongrass Martini and their Filthy Martini, and found both to be delicious.

To end our evening on a sweet note, we tried the Key Lime Pie and the Lindt Chocolate Truffle Cake. The Key Lime Pie was sweet and creamy with a hint of citrusy goodness, and the Truffle Cake was heavenly. The supremely rich and smooth dessert is sprinkled with sea salt flakes which take it to a whole other level of luscious awesomeness. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Spanky’s. You’d be hard pressed to find better ribs in Jakarta. And with their friendly staff and charming atmosphere we’re guessing once you try Spanky’s, you won’t want to.
