The movie geeks around Indonesia might be familiar with the name Garin Nugroho. He’s well known for his debut movie ‘Cinta dalam Sepotong Roti’. Earlier this year, he achieved The Art Knight medal award and Ordre des Arte et des Lettres from the France ambassador of Indonesia. The award was given as a respect for his loyal directorial career and his contribution to the cinema industry in Indonesia for 35 years. Last August he premiered his latest movie Setan Jawa. It is a black and white silent movie which he combines with Javanese contemporary dance and Gamelan music orchestra. Now he’s preparing for his newest movie Nyai.
Nyai tells the story of Nyai Ontosoroh, this shows us that the movie is somewhat an adaptation from Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s Bumi Manusia. The setting is going to be from the 1920’s and the story is about the people who try to reach their independence but get taken away because of the world’s liberality pressure. The duration of the movie will be around 90 minutes, all shot using the one shot technique! The movie was a challenge for him, and it is also going to be a surprise for us. Still, no release date details and trailers yet. Can’t wait!
