When it comes to superheroes, Russia is the last place we think about, with a few exceptions like Colossus, Black Widow and a few others. Guardians, is Russia’s answer to Marvel and DC franchise films.

This film follows every superhero movie plot ever where a gang of misfits have to band together in order to save the world. We even get a taste of the superheroes’ powers in the beginning of the trailer.

Guardians is set during the cold war, where Russia faces an armageddon-like threat from an equally powerful mutant villain. The heroes then have to rely on their powers, which range from the ability to use deadly swords to controlling soil and rocks to turning into a freakishly large bear creature, to save mother Russia.

Each of these heroes represent the various nationalities of the former USSR, and much of it (namely the bear) draw on iconoclastic imagery of Russian culture and folklore.

Guardians is set to release on February 23rd, 2017.
