Tulola Designer Sri Luce Rusna and Actress Happy Salma have come together through their shared passion for handcrafted jewelry and partnered to create the “Juwita Malam” Exhibition. Started in 2007, by Designer Sri Luce Rusna, Tulola jewelry is a tribute to the traditional Indonesian methods of silversmithing. Working closely with a group of artisans from her small studio in East Bali, her collections are entirely handcrafted focusing on traditional techniques and motifs.
Over the years Actress Happy Salma and designer Sri Luce have come together through their shared passion for Indonesian heritage and arts. And through their conversations the idea of creating the “Juwita Malam” Exhibition was born. Collaborating together, Happy Salama and Sri have created an exhibition centered on a collection of limited edition jewelry. Named after the ballad composed by Ismail Marzuki’s, “Juwita Malam”. Inspired by the song’s proclamation of a women’s unique and mysterious beauty.
Tulola has created a collection of 25 meticulously crafted jewels from their Studio in East Bali. Working with a small team of 6 artisans the collection took over 6 months to create. Working across the two islands of Bali and Java, the collection brought together talent to work on specific aspects of the collection. Balinese Master Tukangs specializing in the tradition of granulation, Jawan, and lace worked month after month to bring the collection to life. The perfectly hammered chains were commissioned from Master Tukangs in East Java. Tulola sourced precious stones from Jaipur India and pearls from Tahiti all of which were imported to be set into the jewelry at the Bali studio.
Working together with DIA.LO.GUE ARTSPACE the exhibition will comprise of 25 pieces of Limited Edition Jewelry set against a mural created by the Kommunitas Kesenian Pengosekan Ubud or the Creative Community of PengosekanUbud. Working in collaboration with Tulola the artists of Pengosekan created a 3 meter long mural inspired by the “Juwita Malam” Collection. The mural painted in the traditional style of Pengosekan uses only bamboo brushes created by the artists them selves.
Since its start, Tulola has quietly garnered a following of both local and international celebrities and has been seen on Hollywood stars such as Courtney Love, Mischa Barton, and Kelly Rowland amongst others. Tulola has also been featured on the covers of NME Magazine in 2010, featured articles in Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia and Listed and as W Magazine USA as ‘Most Wanted’ Lists for Jan 2012.
In early December 2011 Tulola opened its first flagship boutique in Seminyak Bali and will also plan to open its second flagship store in Soho New York in 2012. Photos by NR |
